We administered the Ocean Personality Assessment Questionnaire (OPAQ) to a Control Group of 540 experienced sales personnel - all males.

The group sell a range of financial products and services in a very competitive environment and are regulated by an independent authority - The Financial Services Authority (FSA).

The OPAQ measures The Big Five Personality Factors and 30 inter-related Facets of personality.

   
  An analysis of the OPAQ results indicated that 11 personality traits are strong indicators of success - or - lack of success in the sales role.
 
    High Sales Performance Indicators:
High scores for the following:
 
  • Conscientiousness 
  • Achievement Striving
  • Assertiveness
  • Competence/Sense of Competence
  • Positive Emotions
  • Order/Orderliness
  Low scores for the following:
 
  • Emotional Reactions
  • Moodiness/Contentment
  • Frustration/Angry Hostility
  • Sensitivity to Stress
  ▼  Lower Sales Performance Indicators
The reverse of the above plus one other trait - Extraversion.
A low score for Extraversion proved to be a 'Lower Sales Performance Indicator'.
