I suffer from the "what if's" - I think too much about what could go wrong just before and during competitive activity.

One or two failures do not shake my confidence.

I do my best when there's more pressure on me.

Failures and setbacks get me more motivated.

I frequently worry about mistakes.

My boss's yelling puts me off my game.

I tend to compare myself too much with team mates, opponents and colleagues.

I get too nervous to really perform to my potential.

It's easy for me to consistently train at a high level of intensity.

I get really demoralised when I make a mistake when involved in competitive activity.

I tend to get easily distracted.

I'd rather compete against a better opponent and lose - than win against a weaker opponent.

I do better in practice than I do when it really counts the most.

I think about how today's practice will help me achieve my goals in the future.

It's easy for me to let go of my mistakes.

Certain opponents can get into my head and throw me off my game.

I am a confident and self-assured.

I tend to get easily psyched out or intimidated.

When practicing, I often find myself 'just going through the motions'.

If I start out badly, it's hard for me to turn my performance around.

Lousy conditions (weather, noisy air conditioning, temperature, etc..) have a negative affect on me.

I tend to be too negative.

I can keep myself calm and composed under pressure.

I have clear goals that are important for me to achieve.

I get distracted by what my boss thinks about me whenever I screw up.

I have no trouble focusing on what's important and blocking everything else out.

I have trouble dealing with negative thoughts (self-talk).

I dread the ‘crunch time’ - that moment when what I do can make a difference between ‘win’ or ‘lose’.

I am a highly motivated person.

I bounce back quickly from setbacks, bad breaks and mistakes.

Thank you for making decisions about how you think, feel and behave.  Perhaps everybody should take time out to do this a little more.  It could make them more effective and improve their performance.

Mental Toughness
The Personal Awareness Version

The following report does not pretend to be 100% accurate - all personality and behavioural test measurements contain some error.  Use what is helpful to you. Maximise the qualities that will support you in achieving your goals.  Minimise or compensate for the qualities that may impede your progress towards your goals.  Consider sharing this picture of yourself with trusted friends or co-workers, especially those findings that surprise you or those with which you take issue.  This report is designed as a tool for your growth - use it for your benefit.

The Mental Toughness Factors

This report focuses on your score range for five broad personality and behavioural factors that are associated with success in competitive activity.

Bounce Back
Pressure Tolerance
Concentration

Confidence
Motivation

and last but not least...

Mental Toughness Quotient

Your Mental Toughness Profile

Note:  Maximum score for each area is 120

Bounce Back Factor

'Bounce Back' - measures how good you are at mentally bouncing back from setbacks and mistakes.
Mental toughness depends on your ability to quickly leave your mistakes and failures behind you.

Hanging onto your mistakes will get you into big trouble performance-wise. Competitors who dwell on their mistakes, while the competition continues, end up making more mistakes.

World Class Winners score between 112 and 120

Pressure Tolerance Factor

Without the ability to stay calm when under pressure, competitors will always under-achieve. Peak performance demands that you are relaxed once the competition begins.  A little nervousness (‘good nervousness’) is critical for getting ‘up’ for the competition and performing at your best.  However too much nerves (‘bad nervousness’) will tighten your physical and mental 'muscles' and send your performance down the tubes.

World Class Winners score between 114 and 120

Concentration Factor

Your ability to focus on what's important and block out everything else is one of the primary keys to performance excellence. Poor concentration is the major reason why competitors - and teams - get stuck in performance slumps. Getting psyched-out or intimidated is a direct result of concentrating on the wrong things.

World Class Winners score between 117 and 120

Confidence Factor

One characteristic of the mentally tough competitor is a confidence level that seems to be unshaken by setbacks and failures. Under the pressure of competition, low confidence will neutralise natural ability, hard work and talent. Similarly, high confidence will enhance a competitor’s training and God-given talents, lifting their performance to the next level.

World Class Winners score between 116 and 120

Motivation Factor

Motivation is the fuel that will drive you to a successful completion and the accomplishment of your goals. Without adequate motivation people get stuck having  ‘permanent potential’.  Without motivation you won't put in the work necessary to become a winner. Your motivation also helps you to pick yourself up after a setback and keep going.

Here is more information about your scores and some advice that may help you stay a world class winner or become one!

Very High and High Range Scores
Scores in the Very High and High ranges indicate a special strength for that factor.  Congratulations if you score in this range.  But don't rest on your laurels.  Complacency and coasting will whittle away your strength.  Remember, it's a dog-eat-dog world.  There's someone just behind you who is also striving to win!

Middle Range Scores
Surprise, surprise - scores in the middle range indicate average strength for that factor.  If you are happy being average - fine - that's your right.  If you are not happy, it's an indication that you need some 'Behaviour Modification'!  That's not so serious as it sounds - it simply means that if you want to improve your competitive performance you've got to acquire and develop new skills, work harder and think carefully about changing some of your attitudes.  It won't be easy, but if your score is in this range, the chances are, you will succeed.

Low and Very Low Range scores
Low scores for any factor highlight problem areas.  These 'mental weaknesses' could well be the cause of poor performance.  You may well be devoting enough time and energy to your work, but what about your mental training and development?  Scores in these ranges indicate a pretty high need for some serious 'Behaviour Modification'.  You are unlikely to reach your peak competitive performance unless you acquire new skills, activity patterns and think very carefully about changing some of your attitudes.  It won't be easy. It will be like 'learning to write with the other hand'.  It will be hard work but it is possible.  All you need is commitment, determination and belief in yourself ... Mental Toughness!
